Stems, slender, smooth 30 to 60 cm tall, branched at top - several usually arising from root crown. Leaves have smooth sheaths except for hairs on upper portion, and flat, smooth blades 1.5 to 7.5 mm wide. Panicles branched, the branches moderately spreading, bearing numerous spikelets 6 tp 15 mm long. Spikelets flat, containing 20 to 40 florets or seeds; dark grey-green to purple.
