Features

Stromata consist of upright (taller than broad), terminal clusters of globose, fertile heads attached to a flattened stalk. Each head is 2–4 mm in diameter. There are several perithecia per head, with long pubescent stipes. The stromata in total is 4 cm high x 1 cm broad. The fertile heads are dull black, with a white interior, while the stipes are blackish brown. The surface of the fertile heads is wrinkled and tuberculate. Perithecia are 0.5–1 mm in diameter. The ascospores are brown, smooth, one-celled, ellipsoid-inequilateral, 20–23(–25) x (6–)7–8 µm, with a straight germ slit slightly less than the spore length, on flattened side of spore. This species is characterised by having globoid fertile heads attached to a flattened stipe. Ascospore shape and stromal surface indicates that it is related to X. polymorpha.
