Is there a handle on Sphagnum in NZ and whether it is threatened or not. For instance how threatened, if at all, is pakihi with sphagnum in it on the West Coast. Has it all been humped and hollowed for dairying or is there still lots left?
Ask Allan Fife ([email protected]) - he revised Sphagnum and would probably have the best feel for the status of the various species and whether any are truly threatened. For a time a few were listed but I recollect that the Shaw's (Duke University - John and Blanka Shaw) working with collections in AK thaty it seems Allan didn't look at found many specimens of the key 'threatened' ones from sites it is still present - so for now as least I don't think there are any sphagna listed as 'threatened'. Still try Allan.
OK thanks Peter will do
