  1. Plant ID

  2. Can someone please let us know what this young tree may be. Thank you

  3. Its in the mallow family (Malvaceae) - from what i can see I suspect its a Hoheria - it looks a little like you have a hybrid and I would like to see clearer images of the leaves - if pushed Id say it was H populnea (but leaves a bit small), H. sexstylosa (but leaves don't seem to have the usual hairs and colour) or H. populnea x H. sexstylosa.

  4. Here is a close leaf photo. Thanks so much for your help. Our neighbours fear it was a silver birch.

  5. OK - thanks - its not a birch its a species of Hoheria (lacebark) generally very fast growing small native tree. I can't say which as the small leaf puzzles me. It looks like H. populnea but leaf too small and so inclined to think it may be H. sexstylosa

    Check out these fact sheets

    Hoheria populnea - see http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=824
    Hoheria sexstylosa - http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=825, http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/3696713, http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/3691197,
    Hoheria populnea x H. sexstylosa - http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/2745633

Betula pendula (birch) - see http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=3513

    Hope that helps
