    Hi there, I cant seem to ID this guy? Any help greatly appreciated.

    Growing around the base of a tree on GBI

    Just confirming that the tree that this is on was a tree fern and not something like manuka or kanuka?

    Slime Mould of some sort - looks rather like dog vomit slime mould (Fuligo septica) - see http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/1580518 but that one is usually on the ground on rotting wood or wood chips. I have seen similar at Te Paki (see http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/2784810) but the name on that one was disputed...

    As a slime mould it will deteriorate rapidly - what you are seeing is the sexual phase which doesn't last very long ( a few days maximum)
