  1. Banksia integrifolia

  2. Do Tuis like this tree?

  3. Hello,
David Medway has observed tui feeding on Banksia integrifolia in New Plymouth (http://kete.pukekura.org.nz/documents/0000/0000/0266/Bellbirds_in_New_Plymouth_paper.pdf). Native nectar resources are scarce in June so this plant would be very valuable for tui.
However, B. integrifolia has now naturalised in New Zealand and is listed in several regional pest management strategies.
Perhaps there is another introduced shrub with winter nectar resources which is not weedy which you could plant? Alternatively, you could set up a sugar water feeding station for the winter months.
    Good luck!
    Jesse

  4. Yes - Banksia (incl. B. serrata, B. aemula and B. marginata) are very popular nectar sources for tui and bell bird. BUT please don't plant them - especially B. integrifolia - as they naturalise (and B. integrifolia especially poses a serious threat to our terrestrial coastal ecosystems)
