  1. How do you grow pate from seed?

  2. Could anyone advise me on growing pate from seed please? I have just collected some fruits, macerated them and separated the seeds by washing. Not sure whether to dry and scarify them next or plant them fresh.
    many thanks

  3. Laurie Metcalf says in 'Cultivation of New Zealand Trees and Shrubs' says "It is easily grown in reasonably good soil and prefers a slightly shaded situation. In cultivation it will grow to 1.8 - 3.6 m in height. Propagation by seed or cutting."

    This isn't much help, sorry!

  4. I would just collect ripe fruit straight off the tree. Use a free draining seed raising mix (eg. 2:1, fine sand:peat). Softly rub fruit to puncture and flatten then place on the seed raising mix in a seed tray and cover with a very thin layer (<0.5 cm) of the mix. Keep mix damp and in a shaded location as this species prefers these conditions. As it is winter you may not get much happening for a while. Be careful not to ruffle up the mix too much as this will disturb the germinating seeds. I'm not sure of the germination rates for this species, but you should get at the very least a few to grow.
    Cheers, Rowan

  5. many thanks. I'd already consulted Metcalf and other books but none give any detail. Meanwhile I have already done some as you suggested Rowan, and stratified some for later planting. I've been compiling information of this kind for the spp I am revegetating on my land in the Maruia Valley and there are lots of gaps in the literature. Would be a good group task with which I would be happy to assist editorially ...
