The North Island and much of the South Island experienced a very hot and dry summer, conditions which potentially could result in mast seeding of a range of plants, especially beech and tussock. Beech masting results in negative ecosystem impacts such as dramatically increasing rodent, predator and possum populations which have severe impacts on both fauna and flora. I think the NZPCN phenology recording season would be a great portal for documenting beech flowering nationally and this information could be analysed as a community science project and used to advocate for enhanced pest control of our important beech forest ecosystems. Is anyone interested in helping to record beech flowering and then seeding this coming summer?
