  1. NZ places named after plants that are now gone

  2. I heard at the weekend that Pukekohe got its name from puke kohekohe - "the hill of the kohekohe" but that the hill where the trees grew is no longer there and the kohekohe have gone. Are there other places named after NZ native plants where the species no longer grows there? Mistletoe Bay in the Marlborough Sounds is another one but how many others are there? Any suggestions?

  3. These place names are not named after particular species, but in Southland there is a swag of places named for forest which is no longer there: Gummies Bush, Gropers Bush, Centre Bush and Wreys Bush. A tiny fragment of forest remains at Heddon Bush and Eastern Bush.

I believe there is no longer any Griselinia littoralis near the Southland town of Kapuka.
