The New Zealand Plant Conservation Network

Anyone have a name for this Myosotis photographed on West Dome ,(near Mossburn), Northern Southland growing on ultramafic soil in the company of Celmisia spedenii at about 700m.I'm wondering whether it falls with the scope of M.cheesemanii.

Flowers

Nice pictures Dave, I've never been up there when it is flowering. It looks like Myosotis 'Mossburn' (Naturally Uncommon), there is no fact sheet for it on NZPCN because it is not a formally named entity. It gets a nice tinge to it over the winter as per this photo taken in September. Where your photos taken on Black Ridge? Pretty spectacular place, eh? There are some other neat things up there too including Cardamine sp. 'calicole', Carex uncifolia, Celmisia spedeni, Oreomyrrhis basicola and Brachycome sp. 'West Dome'.

Yeah it's a great place with some spectacular clumps of Celmisia linearis there as well.

Hi Dave. Not Celmisia linearis...you mean the ultramafic endemic Celmisia spedenii.

Hello Peter I did mean Celmisia linearis. Here's a couple of pics showing what I think is Celmisia linearis growing a bit further up the ridge from the Myosotis. First pic shows a comparison with C.spedenii.

Foliage and flowers.

According to Brian Rance there are hybrids C. spedenii x semicordata and C. spedenii x densiflora up there. I'm unfamiliar with C. linearis.

Your images suggest a hybrid, possibly Celmisia gracilenta (or C. sessiliflora (if that is up there) crossed with C. spedenii. Celmisia linearis is a nothotaxon C. xlinearis J.B.Armstr. of the putative parentage C. gracilenta x C. sessiliflora.
