  1. NZ Plants with bulbs, tubers?

  2. Hi there
I'm teaching NZ Flora and, preparing the weeds part at the moment, I am wondering... Do we have any native plants with bulbs or tubers at all?

  3. Terrestrial orchids have tubers

  4. yes, look through Flora II. Hypoxis and Iphigenia are two that spring to mind

  5. Thanks, Mike and Mike! That is useful...

  6. I am a member by the way. Maybe I wasn't logged in...

  7. And Hypoxis is not native according to the NZPCN website... I don't know it...

  8. Hi Lyneke

Hypoxis is , as you correctly point out not indigenous - our plants are in fact Hypoxis glabella var. glabella (an assumedly early Australian introduction). Plants with bulbs - well Iphigenia, our terrestrial orchids mostly have them, as Arthrpodium candidum also has them, tuberous bulb-like structures are also found in Bolboschoenus.

  9. Thanks, Peter!
