  1. Kerria japonica

  2. Hi,
I would like to know if the Kerria Japonica Cultivar Pleniflora is in New Zealand. I have moved to NZ from England eight years ago. I am land scapeing the garden and would like to plant some. Question: are they in NZ

  3. HI Jules, it certainly does seem to occur in New Zealand. http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=3347
Have you considered using native plants in your landscaping instead. Many introduced plants have developed or are developing the the ability to become highly invasive and threaten the New Zealand environment. Here is a booklet that might give you some ideas http://www.weedbusters.org.nz/downloads/PlantMeInstead/Plant%20me%20instead%20northland%2019%20Sept.pdf

  4. Hi Jules - yes it is sparingly naturalised in New Zealand (first recorded here in 1995). I have seen it wild in the Waikato mostly, It is not particularly invasive though - it spreads mostly by suckering and occasionally by seed (it rarely sets fruit). Its an attractive plant that prefers a cool climate and good soil - you indicate you are from the far north - I have not seen it thriving in gardens north of Warkworth. While I understand your interest Astrid is correct, it may be worth looking at some indigenous alternatives but if you pick Kerria, then at least, as far as I know its not likely to be troublesome plant in your garden or outside it.
