This shrub in front of our house is in desperate need of trimming. I have a history of killing plants by accident, so I'd like to look this one up before I start, so I know how to treat it right.

Yes - but not pure Hebe speciosa - it looks like the cv la seduisante - note the deep maroon branchlets, leaf buds and dark cast on the leaves. Matt is correct about trimming - which in any Hebe is easy to do.
