Can anybody tell me the kind of the tree ? Seen November, 15 near Russel.
Hi Frank, it looks like a Norfolk pine - Araucaria heterophylla, a none native form unsuprisingly Norfolk Island, they naturalised here in 1959 according to our plant profile. Cheers Matt.
Yes Matt is quite correct this is Araucaria heterophylla - its alway's worth checking because Cook pine (A. columnaris) is locally common in some areas of the North Island and people often mistake that species for Norfolk pine.

as an aside, Cook pine is not on the NZPCN list
Because Mike Cook Pine has yet to be found naturalising....NZPCN only lists naturalised and/or naturalising plants.
