  2. Ive been told the name of this common plant on our coast, but its in one ear and out the other I confess. I dont concentrate when head down cutting gorse for planting spots.
Plus can anyone advise on propergation? Can I start seed directly on seed railsing mix or does it like to be started on grit / pumice?

  3. Hi John, it looks like tauhinu (Ozothamnus leptophyllus) to me. Its commonly found in the back dune environment growing amongst Coprosma acerosa and Pimelea villosa when in a natural (un-modified) situation.
    Cheers Matt

  4. HI John it is tauhinu http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=1081

  5. You can propagate this species by taking cuttings from the stem tips; place in a mix of peat and sand and keep moist (a bit of rooting hormone is helpful). Resist pulling the stems up too early to look for developing roots, give them a couple of months.

  6. Back to your question, they are a dryland plant so a free draining medium would be best for seeds. I would then cover with a fine sprinkling of a pale coloured sand as a lot of fine seeds need some light to germinate but also need some sort of covering to keep them moist. Seed is better than cuttings for revegetation purposes.
