  2. Found growing up a rewarewa in Titahi bay, competing with with white rata...
    I have photographed the back of the leave due to its vein structure. I took a sample assuming the trunk was only covered in rata to find something else...

  3. Probably Metrosideros diffusa, but could be M . colensoi depending on leaf size

  4. Metrosideros diffusa - its common in that area and the image suggests this gathering is glabrous. Metrosideros colensoi is hairy though juvenile foliage is glabrescent. However juvenile foliage is much smaller than the adult, and quite different to that depicted here.

  5. I'm chuffed, I went to view some old kohekohe out on the coast and didn't expect to find 2 species of rata in the wild - or on the same tree!
