  1. Numbers of plants in North vs. South Island

  2. My French volunteer student asked me a question that I don't know the answer to: Does the South Island have more or less native plant species than the North Island and how many? Help!

  3. In brief - yes it does - but off hand I can't tell the exact figures now - give me a while and I will try. However, you can tell your colleague that as the taxa rich groups are alpine, and there is more alpine habitat in the South Island, this is why it has more taxa and greater diversity than the North Island.

  4. Hi Peter, brief analysis: 927 species on both North and South Island, 284 North island only, 643 South Island only. Doesn't include island endemics or indeterminate species. South Island is a clear winner!!! there are a few species that I haven't done the distribution for yet, but likely to be less than 20 in this category

  5. Thanks! Useful to know.

  6. Yo Mike - thanks - I was working on this - you've saved me some time.

  7. No worries. It got me thinking and I had my database handy. Should have been doing other things that pays the bills .....
