  2. The Te Mata Peak (Hawkes Bay) broom has been named Carmichaelia arborea on plant lists compiled by 4 botanists, 1 amateur and 3 prof. According to NZPCN and Eagle, C. arborea is a SI sp and further, some features including the seed colour don't match C. arborea.

  3. Carmichaelia arborea is the correct name for what was known as C. grandiflora, which is a South Island endemic. As the older name C. arborea has priority. Your image fits (to me) what we used to call C. flagelliformis which is now a synonym of C. australis. Prior to Peter Heenan's revisions of the genus many botanists followed the thinking of the late A.P. Druce in treating most members of what is now C. australis as ( incorrectly) C. arborea. NZPCN fact sheets have the full synonymy and key references so check them out.

  4. Thanks Peter. I'm pleased that little mystery is cleared up. The Te Mata Peak plant fits well with C. australis #2 in Eagle and with the description of C. australis in NZPCN. I'll sleep easy tonight.

  5. Hi Mike,
Can we put this image up the C. australis fact sheet?

    Cheers,
    Jesse
