    My thoughts as well - some of the rosettes are Wahlenbergia and I wonder if the aggregated clumps are merely virus-ridden (or perhaps some other pathogen has caused that fasciation)

    Thanks. I was a bit confused by the thick crowded leaves and wondered if it was because the plants were growing in a very wet subalpine area. I'm used to seeing them on scree slopes and in clay pans.
