  1. kanuka ID

  2. Hi there, are you able to help me identify this Kunzea? Unfortunately it isn't flowering at the moment. Is it growing in a garden and do not know its provenance.
    Thank you in advance.

  3. Sorry I meant "It is growing in a garden..."
Here is another close up photo.

  4. Hi Emma, do you perchance live somewhere on the North Shore? Your kanuka is a hybrid - Kunzea linearis x K. robusta - this hybrid occurs widely on the northern shores of the Waitemata in a massive introgressive hybrid swarm. You can tell from (amongst other things) your fruiting image which shows elongated 'subsessile' racemose inflorescences and also by the distinctly silvery grey foliage. Pure K. linearis is now scarce around Auckland but you can still see it at Kendall's Bay and on the cliffs along the northern side of the harbour bridge . Kunzea robusta is very common inland from the harbour.

  5. Hi Peter, thank you very much for the ID. I happened to see this one in south Auckland.

  6. That's interesting - where in South Auckland? Kunzea linearis pretty well cuts out on the northern side of the Waitemata, though there are a few spot occurrences in the northern Waikato and Hauraki, However, you say it was a garden plant, do you know if it was planted from a wild to garden transplant or a garden centre purchase?
