I would be very grateful if you could help me identify this species - it is a small tree, with vari-coloured leaves all year round, growing in waste ground, and does seem to set quite a few seedlings. Photos attached.
Looks a lot like Homalanthus populifolius,a weedy Australian import.

Correct. This species (Queensland popular) is a locally common, bird dispersed naturalised tree north of Hamilton. It's quite common in the Kaipara.
