  2. Hi, this piece of wood was found preserved within an archaeological context at a site close to the coast near Tauranga. I have tried to show the colour of the wood under the bark in the picture. It is a branch 160cm long with a diameter of 40cm. I would appreciate any help so I can further my research.

  5. Hi Elly, it is very difficult to identify plants from old wood, but if you get a cross section through the wood (or a core) then there are people who can identify it from the cellular structure. Don't know who, but the others will undoubtedly know. My suspicion is totara because of the reddish wood but that is a BIG guess

  6. Elly - try the Archaeology Department at the University of Auckland. A good initial contact for you is Angela Scott in DOC Auckland ([email protected]).

I am not good with wood.

  7. Thanks Peter, knew you would if you could!
