  1. Schizeilema trifoliolatum

  2. Is it common for the underside of the leaves to be purple tinged ?If not what possible species can anyone suggest for me to investigate next ? Is it known from the forest on the hills behind Mataikona Road in Castlepoint which is where I have my unidentified specimen? Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks for any help..

  3. Hi Jenny, yes it is frequently purple underneath, but it is also common in the otehr larger-leaved species. This is the most commonly encountered species in the North Island. Schizeilema colensoi is the only species that is similar in the North Island and is very poorly known, but is distinguished by the curved leaf margin and the involucral (small scales at base of the flower stalks) are pointed rather than blunt.

  4. Thank you. I wish I had known what to look for before my sample deteriorated..I will check these features next time..Thanks again...

  5. No worries. Everyone is always learning in botany and starting to know the distinguishing features of the species in the different genera is an important step. You did well to know it was a Schizeilema.
