  1. Leontodon saxatilis

  2. Is the hairy hawkbit (Leontodon saxatilis) recorded as being in NZ?

I photographed this at Heyward Point, Dunedin, and believe this is what it would be (could also be Leontodon hispidus?)

  3. And one more image

  4. Hi Danilo, it looks like a Hypochoeris to me, maybe H. radicata?

  5. The stems of Hypochoeris are branched and carry multiple flower heads, while here all plants definitely had one flower head per stem only.
Unfortunately I did not take any detailed images of the leaf hair, but what I can see on the full resolution image looks like forked hair tips, which would suggest Leontodon also. I might have to go back next spring and check on this again - the plants would be really easy to find.

  6. Hypochoeris does occasionally have one flower per stem and it is not a good character to separate out the related genera. The bifid hairs would indicate that it is Leontodon taraxacoides

  7. Hi Danilo

Get hold of a copy of a copy of Identification od Weeds and Clovers by A J Healy 3rd ed. as it is a great little book for not only clovers but docks, Juncus, barley grasses , other weed groups and especially the dandelion group.

Try Bookfinder. Com as they have a cheap 1982 ed.

    Cheers

  9. Thanks a lot Mike and Pat! I've ordered a copy of the book suggested by Pat, but this is definitely one I'll need to look into more closely!
